This wine is
rare and memorable. The Mosby
Sangiovese Ripasso Doppio
is definitively rich and concentrated with a deep red color. An intense
berry nose is followed by black fruit and pie cherry flavors. The
long, smooth finish is similar to a port, and this wine is a natural
served in the same manner. Traditional Ripasso wines are from the Valpolicella
region of Italy, and are made by racking the fermented juice of one year's harvest over the skins or lees
from a previous vintage. In Italy, the fruit used for these wines include Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara
grapes. Bill Mosby has made a Ripasso-style wine using 1997 Sangiovese wine repassed over the skins of
1998 Barbera, Dolcetto, and Teroldego fruit. This wine was then repassed a second time over skins from the
same grape types, using fruit from the 1999 harvest. The result is a Sangiovese Ripasso Doppio, or double
repassed Sangiovese.
