Bill Mosbys
new release
of Dolcetto is here. The
2006 Mosby Dolcetto is a limited production wine that is rapidly gaining attention! The
2006 Mosby Dolcetto
has a nose with spicy hints of mace and forest floor. The
backbone of tannin is interlaced with clean raspberry fruit, followed by a
firm, spicy finish.
Bill crafted this wine in the style of the famous
Dolcetto d'Albas, and we enjoy it paired with hearty entrees - try
it with roasted duck, or beef short ribs braised in red wine. While this
Dolcetto is delicious now, it has the stamina for up to five years of
cellar time.
Although the name means
"little sweet one," this is not a sweet wine. Dolcetto is the everyday
wine of choice on family tables throughout the Piedmont region of Italy. |
"I decided to grow Dolcetto during one of our trips to
Italy," says Bill Mosby. "We had the opportunity to
taste and learn about a lot of Dolcetto di Albas. They are intriguing, very
drinkable and I like the idea that they are considered the everyday wines of choice."
"Dolcetto and Barbera are the wines on most family
dinner tables in the Piedmont region of Italy," Mosby explains. "The Dolcetto is
a good quaffing wine; has a nice moderate structure."
Dolcetto, like Nebbiolo, is
grown predominantly in northern Italy. Unlike Nebbiolo, however, Dolcetto grapes tend to
ripen earlier and are much less temperamental when it comes to soil and climate. (There
are other parts of Italy where wine from the Dolcetto grape is known as Ormeasco.)
Dan Berger's Vintage Experiences,
Sept. 9, 1999. "Wine of the Week! 1998 Mosby Dolcetto,
Santa Barbara County. Bright cranberry and fresh plum aroma, tart entry but loads of
fruit. Pair with tomato-based sauces. Dolcetto, the early-release red wine of Italy, often
is made without undergoing the acid-reducing malolactic fermentation, leaving it very
tart. This wine did not go through ML. A rare opportunity to taste a fruit-driven
California version of an Italian classic at a fair price."
Epicurean magazine, July/August
1999. Rating: 90. 1998 Mosby, Santa Barbara County, Dolcetto. "Think of Dolcetto like
a fuller-styled Beaujolais, delightfully fruity and smooth, but fleshier with more depth
and some spice behind its exuberant plum and cherry fruit. It's impossible not to like
this wine, and it's an easy match for everything from pork to veal to salmon and pasta. It
even works as an aperitif. This is about as good as Dolcetto can get: everyone ought to
lay in a case of this crowd pleaser."
The Insiders' Wine Line, Volume
3, Number 3 [July 1999]. Rating: 90. Best Buy. "The 1998 Dolcetto, Santa Barbara
County has a perfumed nose of blackberry, strawberry, raspberry, black pepper and rose
petal with hints of tarragon and cedar. The flavors echo the aromas with good depth and
texture followed by a bright, fruity, spicy finish."
The 2000 Mosby Dolcetto
was
a Double Gold medal winner and judged Best of Class at the California
State Fair, a Gold medal winner at the Santa Barbara County Fair, and a Silver medal winner
at the Orange County Fair Wine Competition and a Silver medal winner
at the Long Beach Grand Cru. Dan Berger writes "Classic
black cherry/tar aroma; intriguing taste of anise and soy alongside the deep
fruit. An excellent red wine to go with Italian food", and rates it as
"exceptional".
